JEMMA JEFFERY
Composer for Film and TV and Sound Designer
About me
Jemma Jeffery is a Cambridge-based composer for Film and Television. From an early age, she was drawn to improvisation at the piano—often in place of practicing! Her passion for composition led her to the Young Composers’ Academy (Bristol, UK) and the Young Composers’ Project (Birmingham Conservatoire, UK), and she received her first commission at just 15 for an interactive storytelling project. Recently, Jemma was also a finalist in The Cue Tube’s Vesper Competition—judged by Nicholas Dodd, Brian Morrell, and Stefan Gordon—for her James Bond-style score.
Jemma went on to study Music at Cambridge University, graduating with First Class Honours before completing an MPhil in Music. While at Cambridge, she studied composition under Lisa Illean, Marta Gentilucci, and Mike Ladouceur, and her works were performed in venues including West Road Concert Hall and Christ’s College Chapel. In 2021, her piano trio was shortlisted for the Cambridge Minerva Competition, judged by Judith Weir, Sarah MacDonald, and Joy Lisney.
Beyond composition, Jemma has a deep appreciation for sound in all its forms, which has drawn her into the world of sound design and sound editing. She recently shadowed Sound Editors Tom Mercer and Jonny Crew at Wounded Buffalo Sound Studios (Bristol, UK), gaining insight into sound editing and design for high-profile documentaries on the BBC, Netflix, and Disney.
In addition to scoring for media, Jemma enjoys writing concert music. Her choral work O Mother Night was recently performed by Christ’s College Chapel Choir.
Jemma is a member of the Alliance for Women Film Composers (AWFC). When she’s not composing, you’ll likely find her running, reading or watching movies.
